The Hamot Health Foundation, which has donated $1 million to the overall ECAT project, will help with scholarships for the nursing program, said the foundation’s president, Charles “Boo” Hagerty.
“A lot of people who we think could benefit from a program like this probably live near this neighborhood,” he said. The location of the nursing program in the ECAT building, where classrooms and labs will take up 8,000 square feet on the north end of the second floor, is significant, Donnelly said. “This is a strategy to get quickly into the profession,” said James Donnelly, Hamot’s chief nursing officer. The Erie program will cost a total of $33,000 to $34,000, with scholarships available, and is designed to get students jobs once they graduate. Nurses with a bachelor’s degree can advance into leadership positions and other higher-paying jobs. Officials said the program is aimed at attracting diverse students who could go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing. “We needed to make a bold move to ensure that Hamot is staffed in the future,” he said. The program, which will have no more than 108 students, will graduate nurses more quickly than a four-year program, helping Hamot and other facilities deal with the chronic nationwide nursing shortage, said the president of UPMC Hamot, David Gibbons. Students will get clinical instruction at UPMC Hamot, take non-nursing classes at Gannon and complete the balance of their classroom work at the ECAT building. Starting in August 2021, the Erie nursing program - to be called the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot - will enroll 54 students on a track to graduate as registered nurses in 16 months, officials said. The addition of the nursing program increases the number of tenants related to health care that will occupy the site. A pharmacy for the clinic will move in as part of the renovations. An anchor tenant is Wayne Primary Healthcare, a clinic operated by Primary Health Network in the building since 2012.
